The Three Fates
Collaboration - 2014
This collection began with an amazement at how French women carry themselves with natural
beauty and confidence. Mackenzie Primack and Nona J. Thornton came to find that one aspect of their
garment collection aids in their effortless display of confident beauty... Lingerie. While traveling throughout France, specifically in Nîmes and Paris, the two became awestruck by the quality and fineness of intimate garments. This fine quality is worn as a secret, hiding underneath the everyday clothes of the confident French woman.
The collection aims to achieve the sleek sexiness of French traditional intimates that are sweet yet desirable, with the underlying theme of the Roman myth of the fates known as “Morai”. These three fates; Nona - the spinner of the thread of life, Decima - the measurer of the thread of life, and Morta - the cutter of the thread of life, are interpreted through the color choice of each garment, which is embellishment and lace. Finally, the continuous motif of the pomegranate relates once more back to Roman mythology of the feminine fruit, the pomegranate.
The cotton/linen garments are hand-dyed and constructed with cotton thread by Nona J. Thornton. At the same time, the embellishments and lace are embroidered with silk upon silk organza by Mackenzie Primack. Such a combination of materials and techniques is used to emulate the Western European garment-making process.
